turbid fringe series
turbid fringe 4, watercolor, gouache, and salt mounted on unfinished wood, 8x8 2023.
The turbid fringe is a dynamic and visually striking zone that forms at the interface between a river and the open ocean, characterized by a distinct band or fringe of cloudy, turbid water. This phenomenon occurs as sediment-laden river water encounters the clearer, saline waters of the ocean, causing a visible contrast in water clarity and color.
My turbid fringe series of abstract watercolors capture and reinterpret this interaction where land meets the sea. As pigments of Payne's gray, neutral tint, teal, and iridescent gold interact with each other and with salt added during the painting process, they blend and manifest a captivating display of contrasting elements and particles. As a hydrochromancer, I invite the viewer to use these forms and colors to consider the turbid fringes of their own minds - the places where clarity and ambiguity meet and combine. (2023)
